The 7th H5N1 infection this year in Egypt has been posted on the WHO World Health Organization) website. This is the case that I wrote about on Monday (see Egyptian Media: MOH Reports Another H5N1 Case).
Egypt reported 39 total cases in 2009, with just 3 in January of that year – so 7 cases contracted in January is a pretty good jump in numbers.
Another difference appears to be the ages of those infected.
Last winter, we generally saw toddlers with mild infections. Since January the ages of those reported infected have been 20, 1, 3, 45, 40, 29 and 37 and at least 2 are reported to have been in critical condition.
This makes the 97th confirmed human infection in Egypt.
Avian influenza - situation in Egypt - update 29
10 February 2010 -- The Ministry of Health of Egypt has announced a new case of human H5N1 avian influenza infection.
The case is a 37-year-old male from Helwan District, Helwan Governorate. He developed symptoms on 31 January and was hospitalized on 6 February, where he received oseltamivir treatment. He is in a critical condition.
The case was confirmed by the Egyptian Central Public Health Laboratories, a National Influenza Center of the WHO Global Influenza Surveillance Network (GISN).
Of the 97 laboratory confirmed cases of Avian influenza A(H5N1) reported in Egypt, 27 have been fatal.
