Dr. Michael Greger: Flu Factories Video

I am an unabashed fan of Dr. Michael Greger, and have mentioned his bird flu book, and lecture videos, in this blog a number of times. Dr. Greger is director of Public Health and Animal Agriculture in the farm animals section of Humane Society International

While we are in the midst of a `swine flu’ pandemic, his lecture and book on bird flu remains as relevant today as it ever was, and I can’t recommend them enough.  I return to his book often when doing research.

Bird Flu: A Virus Of Our Own Hatching - The lecture based on his critically acclaimed book on bird flu, by Michael Greger. MD.  An entertaining speaker who deals well with a disturbing subject; factory farming practices that have exacerbated the growth of zoonotic diseases worldwide.

His book is freely available online here, and is highly recommended.  He also offers it in hard copy, with the proceeds going to charity.

On Friday I received a DVD from Dr. Greger (thank you!) with his latest presentation – one that is as hard to watch as it is important to see – called Flu Factories.

In it, Dr. Greger examines not only the lineage of the current novel H1N1 swine flu virus, but the ways that factory farming all but guarantee that future zoonotic viruses will emerge.

It is a sobering, and very informative hour-long video.

As with his other videos, and his book, this video is available for free online.   You may prefer, however, to order the DVD for better quality video.   The DVD is available from the Humane Society.

In this one-hour presentation, Dr. Greger explores the role factory farming played in the emergence of the current flu pandemic, which has likely infected more than a million Americans.

The swine-origin H1N1 virus is a poignant example of how the treatment of animals can have global public health implications.

Click on a "chapter" of the video to view it, and check back as we put additional chapters online. For higher quality video, this presentation is available on DVD at a special discounted rate.

You can go HERE to watch the video, which is divided up into 40 `chapters’, with each segment running from 1 to 2 minutes.

Frankly, when I received the DVD I didn’t expect that Dr. Greger would be able to surpass his bird flu video lecture, but this one I think does exactly that.

Highly recommended.
