That’s how often northern Japan has felt an aftershock of 5.0 or greater in the week that has followed the massive 9.0 Tohoku earthquake of March 11th.
A total of 262 over the past 7 days.
And during that time there have been 3 shocks greater than 7.0 and another 49 ranging between 6.0 and 6.9.
This map from the USGS shows 473 aftershocks greater than 4.5 mag over the past 7 days.
Making the seismic activity following last Friday’s quake a record setter for Japan.
This from Kyodo News.
Record aftershocks registered in Japan after March 11 quake
TOKYO, March 19, Kyodo
A record 262 aftershocks of magnitude 5 or greater were registered in the seven days following the magnitude 9.0 earthquake off northeastern Japan on March 11, the Japan Meteorological Agency said Friday.
While the frequency of 6.0 aftershocks is gradually decreasing, seismologist warn that another 7.0+ aftershock remains a possibility.
Meanwhile, these smaller quakes continue to exacerbate the damage, and inflict an enormous psychological toll on the residents and rescue workers.
