From NASA’s Earth Observatory a high altitude composite night time photograph showing the widespread loss of electricity across northern Japan in the wake of March 11th's Tohoku earthquake.
This picture shows the loss of electricity as of March 12th by merging images taken in 2010 with the new satellite images.
Yellow indicates lights that were working in 2010 and after the quake.
Red indicates areas of power outages after the March 11th quake.
For more details visit NASA’s Electricity Losses in Northeastern Japan.
Eleven days after the 9.0 quake TEPCO is now reporting that electricity in their service region has been largely restored.
Electricity shortages and rolling blackouts, however, continue across much of Japan.
