We’ve still no word on the laboratory results on the 5 year-old that died last week (see Indonesia: Suspected Bird Flu Fatality) at M Djamil hospital in West Sumatera, although doctors suspected that H5N1 might have been the cause.
Today, another story – this time from Tangerang, Indonesia (in the past a bird flu hotspot, located a few kilometers west of the capital Jakarta)– of an 8-year-old being treated for possible avian influenza.
The article states that the child has been sick for a week, is receiving antivirals (Tamiflu), and his condition is not improving. Lab results are awaited, so this remains only a suspected case.
There is also, according to this report, no history of contact with sick or dead birds.

Tangerang hospital treats possible avian flu patient
The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Tue, 11/02/2010 6:14 PM | Jakarta
An 8-year-old boy from Cipadu Jaya in Tangerang who was suspected of having contracted the avian flu virus was being treated at Tangerang General Hospital, on Tuesday.
“His condition is getting worse, but we are still waiting for test results,” Tangerang General Hospital disease control chief Dr. Ati Pramudji said Tuesday, as reported by tempointeraktif.com.
UPDATE:
Literally within a few minutes of making this post, I discovered that Dutchy at FluTrackers had 3 more (machine translated) articles from the Indonesian Press on this story.
You can find these and future reports on this FluTrackers Thread.
In addition to the child’s treatment, family members and neighbors are being provided with prophylactic antivirals.
