Despite the shrill warnings from the anti-vaccine camps that the H1N1 vaccine was `deadlier than the pandemic virus’, the number of severe side effects being reported around the world has been encouragingly low.
Today Canada’s Chief Public Health officer, Dr. David Butler-Jones held a news conference where he announced that out of the first 6.6 million vaccine doses given, only 36 severe reactions had been reported.
That works out to be just about 1 out of every 180,000 vaccinations. And it should be noted that it hasn’t been established how many of those were caused by the vaccine.
Joanna Smith of the Toronto Star brings us the details. Follow the link to read it in its entirety.
H1N1 vaccine safer than seasonal flu shot
Out of 6.6 million doses administered, only 36 severe adverse reactions have been reported
Joanna Smith Ottawa Bureau
OTTAWA–Fewer people have had an adverse reaction to the H1N1 vaccine than normally react to the seasonal flu shot, according to Canada's chief public health officer.
Dr. David Butler-Jones said Tuesday that reported adverse reactions to the H1N1 vaccine, the vast majority of which have been mild cases of fever, sore arms and allergic reactions, will be made available on the website of the Public Health Agency of Canada.
Butler-Jones said the database shows that as of Nov. 7, when 6.6 million doses had been administered in people across the country, there had been 36 reported severe adverse reactions.
