Vietnam: Two More Provinces Report Outbreaks

Bird flu outbreaks in poultry continue to spread this winter in Vietnam, where now 9 provinces are reporting infections.

 

Vietnam has also reported 4 H5N1 human infections, all fatal, this year.

    HANOI, March 3 (Xinhua) -- Bird flu has recently stricken poultry in the two northern provinces of Phu Tho and Ha Nam, raising the total number of affected localities in Vietnam to nine.

 

    The disease has killed 124 fowls Cam Khe district of Phu Tho, and Duy Tien district of Ha Nam, whose specimens have been tested positive to bird flu virus strain H5N1, the Young People newspaper reported Monday.

 

    Vietnam currently has nine localities having poultry being hit by bird flu: Thai Nguyen, Quang Ninh, Hai Duong, Nam Dinh, Tuyen Quang, Ninh Binh, Phu Tho and Ha Nam in the northern region, and Vinh Long in the southern region, according to the Department of Animal Health under the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Department.

 

    Bird flu outbreaks in Vietnam, starting in December 2003, have killed and led to the forced culling of dozens of millions of fowls in the country.
