As feared for several days, Tomas has regenerated back into a hurricane, is almost on the coast, and the window of opportunity for getting tens of thousands of refugees living in tents to more secure shelter is about gone.
NHC 5am track map 80 MPH winds
Luckily, since hurricane force winds only extend about 30 kilometers from the center, most of the island should be spared the highest winds.
Tropical storm force winds extend out more than 200 kilometers, which means that most of Haiti will likely experience storm force winds.
The biggest danger, however, is expected to come from torrential rains which may spark severe flooding and mudslides.
And with the cholera outbreak showing no signs of abating, the potential flood-related degradation of the sanitation infrastructure in the refugee camps is feared will exacerbate the crisis.
