A little over an hour ago (5 am EST) reports began appearing in the Hong Kong press of an H5N1 infected patient being treated in Hong Kong, who had recently returned from the mainland.
FluTrackers already has more than a dozen news reports collected (visit thread here) from various sources, gathered and translated by Treyfish, Dutchy, and Ironorehopper.
The details are scant at this time, but the case involves a 59 year-old woman who returned from the mainland a day or two before falling ill. While it is probable she contracted the virus in China, it is possible she acquired it locally.
This report from RTHK English News (h/t Dutchy). There is also a short audio clip of Hong Kong Health Secretary York Chow making the announcement.

A case of H5N1 bird flu has been detected in Hong Kong. The patient is a 59-year-old woman who visited the mainland with her husband and daughter.
She returned to Hong Kong at the beginning of this month and developed a fever a few days later. She was admitted to Tuen Mun Hospital where she's in a serious condition.
The Health Secretary, York Chow, said it's not possible at this stage to confirm whether the woman contracted the virus on the mainland or in the territory.
The disease first emerged in Hong Kong in 1997. Six people died in the outbreak - and all chickens were culled locally.
The newshounds of Flublogia are all over this story, and will no doubt have more over the next few hours and days.
I’ll update this blog when we have any significant details, but you can always visit FluTrackers or the Flu Wiki for interim reports.
