Trying to follow, and make sense of Arabic-to-English translations of Egyptian news articles is something at which I’m not terribly adept.
True be told, I start bleeding from my eye sockets after just a few minutes of it.
Luckily, there are stalwart newshounds far better at it than I, who read these translations every day.
You can find them working, often behind the scenes, at flu forums like the Flu Wiki and Flutrackers (among others), and you can read more about the work they do in Newshounds: They Cover The Pandemic Front.
Egypt has seen 19 confirmed Human H5N1 cases this year (and 3 deaths), and is now watching anxiously for the novel A/H1N1 swine flu virus to show up on their doorstep.
Their most recent bird flu infection was reported over night. Bird flu is also endemic in their poultry.
The Arabic press, which can be hyperbolic at times, continues to report on declarations of bird flu `emergencies’, and lots of `suspect’ bird flu cases (most of whom have, thus far, tested negative).
Quite obviously, the level of concern in Egypt is running pretty high. Very recently Egyptian authorities decided to cull all 400,000 swine in the country, out of fear over the arrival of `swine flu’, a move condemned by most public health officials outside of Egypt as unnecessary.
Today, Sally over at Flutrackers has posted a translation of an article from Almasry-Alyoum.com that indicates a number of people have been hospitalized under suspicion of having the H5N1 bird flu virus, that intensive monitoring is going on, and that there have been a number of large poultry die offs reported.
The use of the term SARS in the title is a `generic’ translation, indicating a respiratory infection, not to be confused with the disease named SARS which emerged out of China in late 2002.
Avian influenza roll: the detention of 18 suspected SARS
14 / 5 / 2009The avian influenza virus fierce attack on the provinces of Egypt, as the detention of 18 hospitals were recorded in 7 provinces citizen on suspicion of injury, stepped up in Alexandria and the Red Sea, Suez, Beni Suef raids assignee of live birds and the nests of household.
Department of Health decided to establish a village in Sohag Nazlat Said surged status, which has seen the emergence of the 69 infection, under medical observation for a period of 10 days after the examination report revealed that the epidemic of mass deaths of birds from 15 days and the absence of fortifications and the people throwing dead birds in the canal in front of their houses.
In Beni Suef, surprised by the governor, Dr. Ezzat Abdullah lady voice «knife» in the face during a campaign trying to veterinary and agriculture confiscation «Riachat» District Ghamrawy, and shouted Ms. «Ana Ehigrb Ryashp Haht of tranquility in my stomach and Hacol Guetlny», and enter «Mr. El-Ruby» Deputy Chairman of the city, and the Alakby Colonel, Chief of Detectives of Supply, and obtained the knife, which had been confiscated Riyacp, and the closure of the shop owned by.
Whether this indicates anything serious happening in Egypt, is impossible to tell. Quite frankly, we see `alarming’ looking news reports from that region on a fairly regular basis.
This is something to watch however, and a reminder that bird flu remains a serious concern, even though it has disappeared from the headlines.
You can rest assured that the news hounds on the flu forums continue to watch the bird flu situation intently, however.
If anything comes of this report, they’ll let us know.
