# 3020
On Wednesday I blogged about the first of three 1-hour primetime presentations that would appear later that night on KHNL-8 TV in Hawaii on the pandemic threat.
That first video is now online, and available for viewing. My thanks to Readymom for posting the link on FluTrackers.
Hawaii is the crossroads of the Pacific, and the Gateway to Asia. It is expected that once a pandemic starts (assuming it begins in Asia), that it could be in Hawaii in a matter of days.
For that reason, the Hawaii Department of Health is pushing for better awareness and preparedness.
Hawaii, after all, is an island state, and is particularly vulnerable to supply chain interruptions.
The broadcast schedule of these three shows is as follows:
Preparing Hawaii for the next pandemic
Three one-hour panel discussions airing live on KHNL NBC 8 and live streaming on KHNL.com.
First program: Wednesday, April 15 8:00 PM HST on KHNL NBC 8 rebroadcast on Sunday on K5 The Home Team on Sunday, April 19 at 6:00 PM HST.
Second program: Wednesday, April 22 8:00 PM HST on KHNL NBC 8 rebroadcast on Sunday on K5 The Home Team on Sunday, April 26 at 6:00 PM HST.
Third program: Wednesday, April 29 8:00 PM HST on KHNL NBC 8 rebroadcast on Sunday on K5 The Home Team on Sunday, May 3 at 6:00 PM HST.
Viewers will be able to call in or email questions or comments.
The first show called Vaccine is available in 2 parts, and features a roundtable discussion between:
Dr. Chiyome Fukino Director, State Dept. of Health
Dr. Sarah Park Chief, Disease Outbreak Control Division
James `Duke’ Aiona Lt. Governor, State of Hawaii
Mari-Ela David Host, HKNL News
The 2 video links are on the right side of the page,
The discussion is very frank, with an emphasis on self-sufficiency during a disaster.
“Preparedness is a thought process that must be ongoing in the community” . . . “The more people who are self-sufficient for any kind of disaster, the faster the recovery period for society as a whole.” – Dr. Chiyome Fukino.
Dr. Fukino also makes the point that the Health Department urges all families to first acquire enough supplies to last first for 3 days – then expand that to 3 weeks – and then expand that to 3 months.
Essentially the same advice that many of the flu bloggers, GetPandemicReady.Org, and most of the flu forums have been advocating for several years.
I applaud the State of Hawaii for producing and airing (in primetime) these videos. Hopefully they will have a lot of people there thinking about how to survive the next pandemic.
And coming next month will be a `playable online scenario’, developed by by the Hawaii State Department of Health and the Hawaii Research Center For Future Studies.
Here is a screen-shot of the Coral Cross website.
We’ll have more on this in May.
In the meantime, take the time to watch this week’s video.
Highly recommended.
