China Detects Small Bird Flu Outbreak In Xinjiang Poultry

In China's first detection of the H5N1 virus since the outbreak in Jiangsu Province in December, authorities in Xinjiang have reported a small die off of birds due to the bird flu virus.

 

Xinjiang Province was the site of China's 4th human fatality in January from the virus, but it is a huge province - and as you can see by the maps below - these incidents are widely separated (by roughly 600 miles).

    BEIJING, Feb. 10 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Agriculture announced Tuesday that dead fowl found in the northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region were confirmed as H5N1 positive in tests by the national laboratory.

 

    The ministry said 519 fowl died of bird flu in Hetian, a southern prefecture famous for quality jade.

 

    The ministry and the regional government had taken emergency measures to deal with the epidemic, killing altogether 13,218 fowl.

 

    The epidemic had been brought under control, said the ministry.
