A little bit of good news on this chilly January morning (yes, it even gets cold in Florida).
Bui Thi Thao, the 8-year-old girl from Thanh Hoa Province in Vietnam that was hospitalized on January 2nd with the H5N1 bird flu virus, has recovered and has been allowed to go home.
Sadly, her older sister died in late December with similar symptoms, and while no tests were conducted, she is suspected of having the H5N1 virus.
Worldwide, the survival rate of known cases of H5N1 infection runs less than 40%.
Of the six confirmed cases from Vietnam in 2008, Bui Thi Thao is the only one to survive.

VietNamNet Bridge - The little girl who was infected with type A/H5N1 flu, Bui Thi Thao, 8, from the central province of Thanh Hoa, left the hospital on Wednesday.
After 13 days treated in the Thanh Hoa Provincial Polyclinic, Thao has recovered from the flu. The Chief of the Infectious Disease Ward, Doctor Le Trong Dung, said the girl did not have a fever and difficulty breathing anymore.
Thao will stay under doctors’ eyes at home to prevent any side-effects.
The little patient’s quick recovery from flu is a good sign, which shows that type A/H5N1 virus has not changed.
The people who had contact with Thao tested negative to type A/H5N1 virus.
