With the recent outbreak in India, one naturally wonders about what is going on in neighboring nations, particularly Bangladesh, which has been battling bird flu since early 2007.
Last year at this time, we were practically hearing every day about new outbreaks in poultry in Bangladesh. In recent months, we've heard very little.
Today WHO's regional office for south-east Asia released this update (hat tip Ironorehopper on FluTrackers) on Bangladesh.
As you can see from the map, 3/4ths of Bangladesh have reported the H5N1 infection in poultry in the past.
Given that some of the `unaffected' districts are completely surrounded by districts reporting outbreaks, it's hard to fathom how they could remain uninfected.
19 December 2008 – Bangladesh
On 16 December 2008, The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, Bangladesh confirmed that poultry in two commercials farms, one in Rajshahi district, in the northwestern part of the country bordering India and one located to the northeast of Dhaka, the capital, tested positive for H5N1.
As of 16 December 2008, a total of 291 outbreaks had been recorded in 47 districts out of 64 districts. The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, Government of Bangladesh, reported that a total of 1,645, 827 chickens have been culled.
So far, the first and only human case of H5N1 infection occurred in January 2008.
