A Glimpse At North Korea's Bird Flu Preparations

We get very little bird flu information out of North Korea, although we are aware that they suffered an outbreak in 2005, and there have been occasional unsubstantiated stories of others.

Today we get rare pictures from the Korea Central Zoo, also known as the Pyongyang Central Zoo, showing disinfection of aviaries and the inoculation of birds against the H5N1 virus.   These pictures, reportedly, were taken on December 9th.

Although no bird flu has been reported from North Korea, one can't help but notice that these veterinarians and workers are all wearing full PPE's (Personal Protective Equipment).

Whether there really was any concern over infection, or whether they simply chose to use this opportunity for a full `dress rehearsal'  for  training or publicity purposes, is unknown.

On can assume, however, that Pyongyang is taking the bird flu threat seriously.

A Hat tip to Sally on Flutrackers for finding and posting these pictures.
