Although authorities have confirmed bird flu in only 15 locations, the number of suspected bird flu outbreaks is approaching 40.  This latest suspected outbreak, at a duck farm in Gongju in South Chungcheong province, is well removed from the others,  increasing the concern that the virus is still spreading.

The government states that they've culled 3.3 million birds since this outbreak began two weeks ago, and they are dispatching 450 soldiers to assist in quarantine efforts today.

S.Korea probes three new suspected bird flu cases

SEOUL, April 18 (Reuters) - South Korea said on Friday it was investigating three new reports of suspected bird flu and sent more soldiers to cull poultry as the worst outbreak in four years spread.

The Farm Ministry said there were two more suspected cases at poultry farms in North and South Jeolla provinces, some 320 km (200 miles) south of Seoul, where the first bird flu recurrence for a year was reported this month.

It also said a suspected case had been reported at a duck farm in Gongju in South Chungcheong province, 130 km south of Seoul, suggesting the virus is spreading at its fastest rate since the country reported its first case in 2003.
