Bird flu strikes Russia
Early tests show the deadly bird flu virus has been found in a village in Russia’s far east, now under quarantine. Doctors fear villagers in Vozdvizhenka in the Primorsky region may have been exposed to the virus. The alarm was raised after 12 chickens died unexpectedly.
Over forty birds have been burned to stop the possible spread of the disease.
Doctors are monitoring the health of residents who may have been exposed to the virus.
Vets are also disinfecting property and vaccinating fowl in nearby villages.
Ria-Novosti news agency correspondent Anatoly Elyukhov says local authorities have switched to the emergency mode of operation.
“So far no new cases of poultry dying have been established, and no humans have been found affected by the respiratory diseases. Nevertheless the doctors will continue monitoring the situation,” he said.
The avian flu is believed to have been carried by migratory birds from Southeast Asia.
