Readers of this blog will no doubt recognized the name Maryn McKenna, author of Beating Back The Devil, the story of the disease detectives at the CDC, and a frequent reporter on avian flu issues at CIDRAP.
Her 7-part series on the pandemic vaccine puzzle is a must-read, proving why she is one of the best science reporters in the business.
Here are the links to all 7 parts of this series.
The pandemic vaccine puzzle
Part 1: Flu research: a legacy of neglect
Part 2: Vaccine production capacity falls far short
Part 3: H5N1 poses major immunologic challenges
Part 4: The promise and problems of adjuvants
Part 5: What role for prepandemic vaccination?
Part 6: Looking to novel vaccine technologies
Part 7: Time for a vaccine 'Manhattan Project'?
Bibliography
Maryn now has a blog of her own called SUPERBUG, focusing on MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus), in preparation for a book she is writing.
She describes it this way:
This blog is the virtual whiteboard for my new book, SUPERBUG: The Rise of Drug-Resistant Staph and the Danger of a World Without Antibiotics, coming in 2009 from Free Press. Whether you're a MRSA researcher or a MRSA victim — or simply a major disease geek — I'm interested in your leads, thoughts, comments and stories. Watch this space for drafts and details as SUPERBUG moves forward.
While my blog concentrates on a potential pandemic threat, one that may or may not materialize, MRSA is already a major problem in our hospitals exacting a huge toll in terms of human lives, misery, and healthcare costs.
This is a big story that is only going to get bigger.
Since I qualify as a major disease geek - and an unabashed fan of Maryn's work - I've placed a perma-link in my sidebar to her site.
I intend to visit it often, and I hope you will too.
