A Cryptic Report Out Of China

# 1771

This year we've heard of four outbreaks of bird flu among poultry in China, including 2 in Tibet.   China has also reported 3 human infections this year.

The feeling by many observers, however, is that surveillance and reporting from China is sub-optimal  (how's that for a euphemism?) , and that these numbers may not accurately reflect the situation there.

Today we get a very brief report from Xinhua News indicating that there have been a dozen reported outbreaks this year.   Locations, and size of these outbreaks are omitted.

We are also left to wonder what a  more "complicated" epidemic control situation means.

BEIJING, March 10 (Xinhua) -- The Ministry of Agriculture said Monday it has received the reports of 12 bird flu cases this year, warning a more "complicated" epidemic control situation this year.

Three of the 12 cases have been confirmed, with two in Tibet Autonomous Region and one in Guizhou Province, both in southwest China, said Li Jinxiang, director of the ministry's veterinary department, on the sidelines of the annual session of China's top legislature.
