Indonesia Reports 98th Fatality

The survival rate among humans infected with the H5N1 virus in Indonesia continues to decline, as that nation reports their 98th death out of 120 reported victims.    More than 81% of those who to have contracted the bird flu in Indonesia have died, compared to a global average of just over 60%.

 

This time the victim, identified as GR (30), was a sales executive at a automotive company. 

 

There are no known links to infected poultry in this case, but authorities are reportedly investigating.

    JAKARTA, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- A 30-year-old Indonesian man from the outskirts of Jakarta died of avian influenza on Thursday, putting the total fatalities to 98 out of 120 contracted people in the country, Indonesian health ministry said here.

 

    The man from Tanggerang town had been treated in a bird flu designed hospital of Persahabatan in east Jakarta since Jan. 18, an official of anti-bird-flu center of the ministry Suharda Ningrum said.

 

    All his laboratory tests was positive on Tuesday.

 

    Another anti-bird-flu official Joko Suyono had said the man did not have historical contact with fowl like many other victims of the disease.

 

    On Jan. 20 the man showed symptoms of high fever, coach, respiratory problem, leucopenia, thrombocytopenic and pneumonia, said Suyono.

 

    The man first showed the symptoms of the disease at Jan. 14 and went to a hospital in the town before he was shifted to the hospital in east Jakarta, said the official.
