New cases of Bird Flu discovered

The chief veterinarian, Ewa Lech, on Sunday announced that the bird flu virus was discovered in the Żuromiński poviat in the Mazowieckie voivodship.

Around 300 hens died from the virus in the farms located in that area between Thursday and Sunday, while 120,000 will be culled. Specialists are carrying out further inspections in farms located within three kilometers.

The infected area encompasses 11 towns within three kilometers from Karniszyn. The danger zone is 10 km, where no hens or eggs can be brought out into the open air. "There is no threat to public health, the situation is under control. We do have an economic problem," said Agriculture Minister Marek Sawicki during a press conference relating to the costs of the infection which have already topped zł.1.6 million.

Sawicki emphasized that the Ministry has funds to compensate farmers the losses related to the incident. (Rzeczpospolita, pp. A1, A9; Gazeta Wyborcza, pp. 1, 4) A.K
