Egypt Begins Media Campaign

Although outbreaks in poultry have been ongoing, the last few months haven't seen any confirmed human cases of bird flu in Egypt.  That is, until this past week . . . when one woman died, and two more were hospitalized in what appear to be separate events.

 

Authorities are taking steps to try to detect the virus, and educate the public, in the wake of these new developments.

 

 

 

 

Health authorities take precautions against bird flu in Egypt

CAIRO, Dec 29 (KUNA) -- Health precautions against bird flu were heightened Saturday in Egypt after the 41st case was discovered with the disease already leading to the death of 16 people.

 

According to "Al-Ahram" daily, Health Minister Dr. Hatim Al-Halabi had discussed with officials here precautions to prevent the spread of the flu, giving directions to form a media campaign to warn people about the deadly disease.

 

The daily also said that inspection visits to poultry shops and houses are going to be conducted.

 

Last Thursday, Egyptian authorities announced that a woman has died from the H5N1 strain of bird flu in the Beni Suef Governorate, some 120 km south of Cairo.

 

The 25-year-old woman from the village of Beni Haroun in Beni Suef, was admitted to the Beni Suef hospital with high fever. (end) rg.gta KUNA 291105 Dec 07NNNN
