Sometimes, you see what appears to be a misprint in a news article, and you simply move on. You figure someone will catch it, and correct it. On Saturday, I saw what I figured was one such mistake in the Jakarta Post. An article announcing 90 deaths in Indonesia, out of 111 cases.
This, for those of you keeping track, is a sudden jump from the current tally of 80 deaths out of 101 cases. The article was slightly reworded, and printed again today. But the numbers remain the same.
90 Indonesians die of bird flu since `05
JAKARTA: About 90 people of a total 111 bird flu patients in Indonesia recorded between 2005 and June 2007 have died, said the Health Ministry's Community and Environmental Disease Eradication Directorate Fonny Silvanus.
"The majority of the fatalities were recorded in West Java province with 29 deaths, while the least fatalities were found in South Sulawesi with only one bird flu patient having died," Fonny said while addressing the launch of a public awareness campaign on animal quarantine.
"On average, the bird flu virus has affected mostly Indonesia's western regions, because geographically the regions are quite humid, which is an ideal condition for the bird flu virus to breed well," Fonny told Antara. - JP
Frankly, I have no idea if these new numbers are correct. If so, 10 new cases (all fatal) have suddenly been included in the mix. Which is curious, indeed.
Officially, the tally at the WHO is 101 cases with 80 deaths.
We'll have to wait and see if this was a twice repeated error in the newspaper reporting, or if it represents a new official total from Indonesia.
